Betting in Sharm el Sheikh
The city of Sharm el-Sheikh is located on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula on the coastal strip of the Red Sea in Egypt. For many centuries, Sharm el-Sheikh was a tranquil fishing village under Ottoman rule. However, having recognised that the region had a strategic location overlooking the Straits of Tiran at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba, the Egyptian government transformed the area into a naval base and major commercial port in the later part of the 20th century. From this point on, Sharm el-sheikh was no longer a peaceful fishing village.
After several disputes and brief wars with Israel, Sharm el-Sheikh was eventually restored to Egyptian rule through the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty.
Today, Sharm el-Sheikh is the administrative centre of Egypt’s South Sinai Governorate. The population is approximately 73,000 citizens and the city has hosted a number of important Middle East peace talks and formal meeting summits. Sharm el-Sheikh has a major industry in tourism which helps to support the economy and has enabled the reduction of its commercial shipping industry. The city’s main yacht and service port is called Sharm El Maya Bay which was previously a military facility.
