The Story of William Hill
Whilst William Hill is one of Great Britain's biggest bookmakers, it would be wrong to think that the company is without representation in any other countries around the world. In fact, the firm employs just over 16,000 people - these workers being placed everywhere from the bookmaker's headquarters in Wood Green, London to other such locations as Australia, Bulgaria, Gibraltar; Israel, Italy and Spain amongst others. As a result, 18% of the company's net revenue comes from their overseas customers.
Despite now being the UK's biggest land-based bookie with over 2,300 stores nationwide, the company began as a postal/ telephone betting service right back in 1934. It was, of course, founded by the William Hill of the firm's title. Hill began to buy betting shops five years after the industry became legal in the United Kingdom with the company now being able to boast its extensive portfolio just under 50 years later.
Those who prefer to not have to walk on down to their local bookie can find William Hill on their smart phones or online. With regards to the former, the firm's website boasts of having a total of over 2.5 million application users, these customers downloading the app in the three years subsequent to its creation in 2012. Their website also states that the number of customers using their app skyrocketed during England's first match in the 2014 World Cup. Last year, 43% of the company's revenues came from mobile devices.
Their online arm is also essential to William Hill's business with 40% of their revenues coming from those users who bet with them online. Indeed, those betting with the company don't just have to bet on sports but can also play poker, bingo and vegas and casino games.
Navigating William Hill
Log into your William Hill account by typing in your username and password in the relevant boxes in the top right hand corner of the sportsbook homepage. You are now ready to bet with William Hill.
Beneath this initial header is a series of tabs allowing punters to move from the betting section of the website to those other areas concerning casino games, bingo and poker; scratchcards, virtual betting and mobile apps. These tabs are skirted by another series of links, each one directing the bettor to a different sports on which they can bet. This list, that can only be seen if you stay on the sportsbook pages, is alphabeticised with more sports available should you select the 'More Sports' drop-down menu in the top right hand corner. Indeed it is also possible to shut down this menu, this making for a less distracting betting experience.
Written in an orange font are another series of links, these directing users to a plethora of the bookmakers' services. These help bettors move to the in-play betting section as well as a schedule concerning when these in-play bets are running - a TV guide to all intents and purposes. Other links stored here are that to stream races and matches through William Hill TV and that to listen to the bookmakers' radio service as well as their home-made podcasts. Here is where the tip advisor function is explained (in short it is a feature that allows punters to tell others why they are backing their selection once they have placed there wager) and where the promotions are listed. You can also stay up-to-date with all sporting news and blogs.
The rightmost column of the William Hill sportsbook homepage deals with adverts more than anything. Look carefully, however, and you will see a twin pair of links, these seeing punters with the opportunity to read the latest sports scores and results as well as the ability to work out their winnings with the bet calculator.
Also up this side are the most popular bets of the day and a series of links to news articles and sports previews. These are always helpful in allowing punters to make more informed wagers. Further down there is a quartet of tabs leading to external links to the bookmaker's social media pages and a series of quick links to the most popular events and leagues. Need any help? Select the section at the bottom of the rightmost column and this will enable you to scour through a series of frequently asked questions.
Select a variable from the main body of the site, the thing on which you would like to place a wager, and see it appear on your betslip at the top of this rightmost column. Type in your stake in the main box (and check the each-way box if necessary) before placing your bet by clicking on the relevant button. Typing in your stake will change the figure in the estimated returns category. Selecting more than one outcome will see a number of further options appear - these for accumulator bets and multiples. These work in much the same way as when you place a single bet - simply type your stake in the relevant box and place your bet.
Offers and Promotions
William Hill customers can then help themselves to a number of recurring deals, offers and services. Unfortunately for those fans of more niche sports and markets, most of these offers concern football. In fact, apart from a pair of more general services, William Hill are only providing promotions on the beautiful game. What are these? Well firstly, the bookmaker are offering to return all stakes up to £50 on all correct score/ double result wagers placed on games that end goalless. Punters will also get their stakes back if the player that they have backed to score the first goal actually scores the second. Again, this is up to the maximum value of £50. Finally for football bets, William Hill will return your stake as a free bet should your straight accumulator bet of six or more teams miss out by one team. The benefit of this promotion over those similar deals offered by their rivals is the fact that this offer applies to those accumulators focusing on any league or competition.
William Hill are another bookmaker to offer a 'Cash In' service, this seeing punters accept diminished returns for cashing in their bet early. Bettors would typically do this should they think that a late goal or try or basket might upset their winning ticket. Alternatively, many punters might just want to cut their losses on their losing bets. Finally, all customers are free to listen to William Hill's radio service - even those visitors to the site who aren't registered with the company. Alternatively, registered users can watch live horse races from the United Kingdom and Ireland through William Hill TV. All they have to do is bet £1 or more on the race that they would like to watch. Terms and conditions apply to all promotions.
