Wimbledon preview and odds: Jiri Vesely vs Joao Sousa
July 02, 2016 - Wimbledon, Third Round
Jiri Vesely pulled off one of the shocks of the tournament so far when he disposed of World No. 8 Dominic Thiem in round two. Next up for the young Czech is a clash against 31st-ranked Joao Sousa who had a tough time on his way to the third round.
Vesely claims second top 10 scalp of 2016
Jiri Vesely caused an upset on the clay courts of Monte Carlo back in April when he knocked out World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. On Wednesday, the 22-year-old claimed yet another top 10 scalp when he sent 8th-ranked Dominic Thiem packing at the second round stage of Wimbledon.
Vesely will now face the Portuguese player Joao Sousa who broke into the top 30 (28th) for the first time in his career last month. Sousa has since slipped back a few places in the rankings and currently sits at No. 31 in the world. He took five sets to find a way past 453rd-ranked Russian Dmitry Tursunov in round one, and four sets to overcome American Dennis Novikov in the second round.
Betting predictions
These two players have never met before but Vesely has the slightly better record on grass and has started this event in better shape. He has also played three sets less than his opponent and is coming into this game on the back of a confidence-boosting win over a top-10 opponent.
