Premier League preview and odds: Newcastle vs Liverpool
December 6, 2015 16:00pm - St. JamesÂ’ Park
Premier League
Struggling Newcastle United will need to be at their best on Saturday when they welcome a Liverpool side that has lost just one of their last 17 games in all competitions to St. JamesÂ’ Park.
Another tough test for the Toon
Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has admitted that his team are facing up to the reality of a tough relegation battle. With no improvement in results or performances, the future looks bleak for fans of the northeast club.
Life in the Premier League can be tough at the best of times, but when you are lacking in form and confidence, every game seem can seem like an impossible challenge. After falling to Crystal Palace and Leicester, the Geordies must try and find a way of picking themselves up for the visit of Jurgen Klopp`s Liverpool.
The Tyneside club have scored just once in the last five games and have only won one game at home all season.
Liverpool riding high
After dumping Southampton out of the League Cup in such dramatic fashion in midweek, Liverpool will be full of confidence coming into this game. The Reds are just six points off the top of the Premier League and are serious contenders for a top four position. A win at the weekend would keep their positive momentum going.
Klopp`s men have only been beaten once in their last 17 games in all competitions - a defeat at home to Crystal Palace that still bugs the Anfield boss. However, they have yet to lose an away game since the German arrived and will be keen to maintain that record when they travel to the North East on Sunday.
Team news
Newcastle are without several players including Jamal Lascelles, Rolando Aarons, Massadio Haidara, Tim Krul, Steven Taylor, Gabriel Obertan, and Curtis Good, while Emmanuel Riviere and Cheik Tiote could both be in line for a return.
Liverpool were boosted by the return of Daniel Sturridge in midweek and could also welcome back Philippe Coutinho for this clash. Meanwhile, they are still without Mamadou Sakho, Danny Ings, Joe Gomez and Jon Flanagan.
