Serie A preview and odds: Genoa vs Sampdoria
January 05, 2015 29:45pm - Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris
Serie A
Top-flight Italian football kicks off in 2016 in style with the Derby della Lanterna, as struggling Genoa face local rivals Sampdoria at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris in Serie A.
Four straight defeats for the Rossoblu
After a successful campaign in 2014/15, in which Genoa achieved a top-six finish, the current campaign has been an anti-climax for Rossoblu fans. With 17 games played, they currently sit just one place and two points above the relegation zone, and come into this game on the back of four straight league defeats.
Last time out, Gasperinis men were beaten on the road at Roma and prior to that, they fell at home to Bologna. That was their second home defeat in a row having previously lost just one game in twelve on home soil.
Montella buoyed by first win in charge
Sampdoria have also had an underwhelming campaign and currently occupy 14th spot with a total of 20 points. They ended 2015 with a home win over Palermo having previously endured a seven-game winless streak that stretched back to October.
That win was the first in five games under new boss Vincenzo Montella. The 41-year-old former striker had spells at both clubs during his playing career.
Team news
Genoa will be without the suspended Diego Perotti, while Giovanni Marchese and Tino Costa are both out injured.
Meanwhile, with the return of Eder from a thigh injury, Sampdoria should have a full strength squad to choose from.
