Golf: The Masters preview and odds
April 7-11, 2016 - Augusta
The Masters Golf
With several big names now dominating the world of golf, could this year`s Master be one of the most competitive on record?
The big three
There is no doubt that Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Jason Day will be attracting the big money at this year`s event. They are the three best players in the world right now and all three have performed consistently well over the last 12 months and beyond.
McIlroy has been the best player over the last five years but the Masters remains his nemesis. After losing in such agonising fashion back in 2011, he has failed to put in a significant challenge and a best price of 9/1 looks a bit short.
In contrast to the Northern Irishman, Jordan Spieth has no demons to battle at Augusta. Last year, the youngster made light work of the formidable course to bag his first green jacket. His form has tailed off slightly in recent weeks and the opposition will be tougher than ever this year.
After five years of knocking on the door, Jason Day finally entered the realm of the elite with his PGA win last year. Since that debut major win, Day has maintained his high performance levels and currently sits at the top of the world rankings. As a result, he will start as favourite with a best price of 8/1 available.
Other contenders
Golf seems to throw up a new major winner each year, and just like Jason Day, Rickie Fowler has been knocking on the door for some time. Since 2010, he has improved steadily and last year was his most successful ever. Now a top five player, Fowler is coming into Augusta in great form having bagged six top-10 finishes in 2016. He has played at five Masters and has finished 5th and 12th in the last two years. In addition, he has been training with Butch Harmon and practicing with Phil Mickleson, two people who know just what it takes to unlock this course.
Another player to watch is 24-year-old Japanese player Hideki Matsuyama. He is fairly new to the PGA tour but has already broken into the top 15 and has eight pro-titles under his belt. And letÂ’s not forget, he was 5th here last year.
Betting odds and tips
You can Rickie Fowler as Outright Winner at 16/1 with Bet365.
Hideki Matsuyama is available at 40/1 with Bet365 and at that price is worth an Each-Way bet.
