Wimbledon preview and odds: Roger Federer vs Marin Cilic
July 06, 2016 - Wimbledon, Quarter-finals
Roger Federer has barely broken a sweat on his way to yet another Wimbledon quarter-final. But things should get a bit tougher for the seven-time former champion when he lines up against former US Open winner Marin Cilic in the last eight.
Federer with eye on eighth Wimbledon crown
It`s been 13 years since Roger Federer landed his first of his seven Wimbledon titles and four years since he won his last. However, with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic already out of the picture, the Swiss legend has a great chance to make it number eight this week.
Standing in his way is World No. 13 and one-time Grand Slam winner Marin Cilic. The Croatian`s one and only win against Federer came at the semi-final stage of the 2014 US Open, on his way to his one and only Grand Slam title. Federer won all five of their meetings prior to that clash, and they have not faced each other since.
The Swiss player reached the semi-final stage of grass events in Halle and Stuttgart following his recent return from injury and has looked in good shape this week. However, he has now gone eight months without a tournament win and has only won one Grand Slam in the last six years.
Cilic has never progressed beyond the quarter-final stage at Wimbledon and has only played in two Grand slam semi-finals. His one and only ATP title on grass came at Queens Club four years ago.
Like Federer, Cilic has enjoyed a fairly smooth path to the last eight and will come into this match fresh after his fourth round clash with Kei Nishikori was cut short when his opponent retired injured.
Betting predictions
Federer has looked sharp this week and is playing on his favourite surface. Only Djokovic prevented him from bagging an eighth crown last year and with the Serb already out, he will be keen to take advantage against an opponent who can be frustratingly inconsistent. The World No. 3 might drop his first set of the tournament but can be expected to prevail.
