Champions League preview and odds: Real Madrid vs Wolfsburg

April 12, 2016 20:45pm - Estadio Santiago Bernabeu

Champions League

Real Madrid will need to mount a comeback if they are to make it to the last four of this year`s Champions League after falling 2-0 away to Wolfsburg in the first leg of this quarter-final tie.

Real Madrid left with uphill task

Real Madrid were left reeling last week when unfancied Wolfsburg grabbed the initiative in this Champions League quarter-final match. The Spanish side went into first leg as clear favourites to win the match and qualify for the semi-final. In fact, for many observers, the result seemed almost inevitable.

While the tie is certainly not over, the 10-time former champions have left themselves with a lot of work to do in the second leg.

Los Blancos only defeat in their last 23 Champions League home matches came against German opposition, when they were beaten 3-4 by Schalke 04 in March last year. On that occasion, they had a 2-0 advantage from the first leg and still progressed to the next stage.

Wolfsburg in driving seat

Wolfsburg may have the luxury of a two goal advantage going into the second leg, but their overall form away has not been great and they still have plenty of work left to do.

The German side have won just three of their last 17 away games in their domestic league, but did win their last two on the road in this competition.

Their best chance of wrapping this tie up could be by netting an away goal. If they can score at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, Zinedine Zidane`s men would have to score at least four goals to progress.

Team news

The home side will be without the injured Raphael Varane.

Meanwhile, the visitors will have to make do without Sebastian Jung, while Daniel Caligiuri remains a doubt.

Betting odds and tips

The Germans will be defending for their lives and will be looking to strike on the break. A single away goal could be enough to dump the Spanish giants out of the tournament.
