Premier League preview and odds: Newcastle United vs Manchester United

January 12, 2016 19:45pm - St James` Park

Premier League

Newcastle will be looking to halt a run of three straight defeats on Tuesday night when they welcome fifth-ranked Manchester United to St James` Park in the Barclays Premier League.

Three straight defeats with no goals for Toon

Newcastle are on a run a three straight Premier League defeats in which they have failed to score a single goal. Their last goal came in the 1-1 draw with bottom club Aston Villa and their last win was almost exactly a month ago.

Steve McClaren`s men come into this game on the back of two straight 1-0 losses away to Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion. As a result, they remain third from bottom in the league with a total of just 17 points.

United sticking with under-fire boss

Following a run of poor result and uninspiring performances leading up to Christmas, many believed that Louis van Gaal’s tenure as boss of the Red Devils was coming to an end. However, it appears that the powers-that-be have decided to stick by their man for the time being.

Last time out, United broke their six-game winless streak by edging a 2-1 win over struggling Swansea. While it was not a vintage performance, the win at least eased some of the pressure from the Coaches shoulders and moved the club back to within striking distance of the top four.

Team news

Newcastle are still suffering from an injury crisis with Vurnon Anita, Papiss Cisse, Mike Williamson, Massidio Haidara, Rolando Aarons, Tim Krul, Gabriel Obertan, Steven Taylor, Emmanuel Riviere and Curtis Good all out of action. However, Jack Colback is in contention after recovering from a knee injury.

Meanwhile, the visitors are still without Phil Jones, Nick Powell, Marcus Rojo, Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw. Jesse Lingard could feature for the first time since picking up a hamstring problem several weeks ago.

Betting odds and tips

The Manchester side have recorded just one win in their last five away trips and lost the last two in a row. Likewise, the Geordies have won just one of their last five home games.

With the 20-time Champions still struggling for form, the draw looks good value at 13/5 with Bet365.
