Venus Williams vs Ana Konjuh - Wimbledon Round of 16 preview and odds

July 10, 2017 12:30am - Wimbledon

Wimbledon Championships Women’s Tennis

Monday`s Centre Court crowd will be treated to an interesting match-up as five-time former champion Venus Williams pits her wits against one of the sports rising stars, Ana Konjuh.

With both players bringing an attack-minded game to the court, this should be a fascinating battle of stamina and power. The youngster has already claimed the scalps of former Aussie Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova and 2011 Wimbledon runner-up Sabine Lisicki. The 19-year-old made it to the quarter-finals on the US Open last year and will be looking to match that effort here, surpassing her third round appearance in 2014.

Unsurprisingly for her age, consistency can sometimes be a problem for the Croatian as demonstrated in her match against Cibulkova when she has to fight back from 5-1 down in the first set and nearly threw away a similar lead in the third before holding on for the win.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams will continue her quest for a sixth Wimbledon crown and her first Grand Slam title since 2008 when she steps onto the Centre Court of Monday. At 37 years of age, she is still competing at the highest level, having already made it to the final of the Australian Open and the last 16 at Roland Garros this year.

The American endured a slight wobble in the second round when she needed three sets to find a way past Chinese player Qiang Wang. However, she followed that up with a straight sets win over rising star Naomi Osaka of Japan.

Betting odds and tips

Konjuh’s rise to the top 30 has hardly been a surprise and if she continues at her current trajectory, she could break into the top 10 soon enough. She has already defeated two players from that category in her career and stands a great chance of making a statement against the 11th-ranked veteran here.

You can back Konjuh to win 2-1 at 9/2 with Bet365.
