Johanna Konta vs Simona Halep - Wimbledon Quarter-finals preview and odds

July 11, 2017 14:00am - Wimbledon

Wimbledon Championships Women’s Tennis

In the final match on Centre Court on Tuesday, Simona Halep will look to achieve World No.1 status by knocking out home crowd favourite and British No. 1 Johanna Konta.

Halep was widely expected to reach the summit of the world rankings much earlier in her career but her inconsistency and lack of a Grand Slam win has weighed her down slightly. Her wait could be extended further if the partisan home crowd have their way on Tuesday afternoon.

The Romanian overcame some early wobbles to defeat Victoria Azarenka in straight sets in the last round. Overall her route to this stage has been fairly smooth with her toughest challenge coming from China`s Shuai Peng in the third round.

Meanwhile, Johanna Konta`s rise continues as she has already surpassed her best ever Wimbledon performance of last year when she was knocked out by Eugenie Bouchard in the second round. Her path has not been easy with her epic clash against Donna Vekic ending 10-8 in the final set and her fourth round win over Caroline Garcia lasting two hours and 12 minutes.

The Brit served well throughout that last game, recording just one double fault and winning 75% of her first service points. She also dominated when coming to the net, winning 88% of her approaches. She took only the one and only break point in the final set to wrap up the match 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.

Betting odds and tips

These two are 1-1 in 2017 with Halep enjoying a 3-2 record overall. However, in non-Fed Cup matches, Konta has the edge with a 2-1 record.

Both players have found form at the right time for this event but Halep has had a much easier ride to this stage and may be feeling slightly fresher ahead of this clash.

However, Konta will have the crowd on her side and that count for a lot at this venue. What`s more, she seems to be growing into this tournament and is starting to look like a Grand Slam winner in waiting.

You can back Konta to win in three sets at 7/2 with Bet365.
