Premier League preview and odds: Sunderland vs Chelsea
December 14, 2016 19:45pm - Stadium of Light
Premier League
Bottom-of-the-pile Sunderland will continue their tough quest for survival against Premier League pace-setters Chelsea when the two sides meet at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night.
Sunderland still bottom despite revival
A run of three win in four games briefly lifted Sunderland off the foot of the Premier League table but the defeat away to fellow strugglers Swansea City at the weekend sent them plummeting back to the bottom.
The Black Cats have only picked up 11 points all season but are just two points away from safety. A win on Wednesday could lift them out of the bottom three if other results go their way.
Meanwhile, a run of nine straight wins has left Chelsea three points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Remarkably, Antonio Conte`s men have only conceded two goals during that period. As a result, they have taken over from Manchester City as favourites for the league title.
Chelsea have scored at least one goal in each of their last nine matches and 10 of their 14 matches have produced more than 2.5 goals. Away from home, they have won their last four in a row, while conceding just a single goal.
The Blues come into this game on the back of a narrow 1-0 win at home to West Bromwich Albion. That was only the second time in the last 10 games that they have failed to score two goals or more in a game.
Team news
The home side will have to make do without the suspended Didier Ndong, while Duncan Watmore (ACL), Lynden Gooch (ankle), Paddy McNair (knee), Jack Rodwell (hamstring) and Lee Cattermole (hip) are all out injured.
Meanwhile, the visitors are still without John Terry (strain), Marko van Ginkel (knee) and Kurt Zouma (ACL), while Oscar is a doubt through illness.
Recent form (League):
Middlesbrough: LWDLD
Liverpool: DLWDW
Betting odds and tips
David Moyes` men have conceded at least one goal in all but one of their home matches this season. However, despite winning their last two home games in a row, it is hard to see them being the team to break Chelseas nine-game winning streak.
In addition, Chelsea have the best defensive record in the league and could well grab another clean sheet on Wednesday.
