There are so many contenders for this race that it is hard to narrow down the field. As a result, we could see another surprise winner at a big price this year.
Irish horses have won the last three races, but they failed to win any for more than thirty years before that, so that trend might not tell us much!
In a course and distance trial earlier in the year, the Nick Williams-trained Siruh Du Lac held off Nicky Henderson`s Janika by a head for the win. That was his third victory in a row and his fifth from seven over fences. With that kind of form, there is no surprise he has risen to the top of the betting alongside the aforementioned Janika who many fancy is progressing well enough to reverse that result here.
Henderson is also represented by River Wylde who fell at the last on his only appearance this season (Haydock). He was leading the race the time and race and looked the likely winner. A capable contender on his day, he could bounce back in style, but there is little to go on other than positive noise from his connections.
Also of interest is the Dan Skelton-trained Spiritofthegames who has impressed in his debut campaign over fences. Fifth in the County Hurdle last term he has progressed well since switching to the bigger obstacles. Finished third to Kildisart over this course and distance last time out and looks well matched to this field. Unexposed and at a price of 8/1, he is our pick of the bunch.
