Euro 2016 preview and odds: Romania vs Switzerland
Parc des Princes, Paris - June 15, 2016
Group stage - Group A
History suggests that this Group A clash between Switzerland and Romania should be close, with both sides having won five and drawn two of their previous 12 meetings.
Old scores to settle
Romania do not have fond memories of playing Switzerland having been thumped 4-1 by their rivals in the second group stage game of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. On that occasion, Roy Hodgson`s Switzerland side may have got the better of the Romanians but it did not prevent Anghel Iordănescu`s men them from winning the group and progressing to the quarter-final stage.
That win came as sweet revenge for Switzerland who were prevented from qualifying for Euro 1992 by Romania when they failed to record the one point they needed from their final group match in Bucharest. Instead, they were undone by a single goal from Dorin Mateuţ that sent Scotland through to the finals at their expense.
Romania had the best defensive record of any team in the qualifying campaign, conceding just two goals in their unbeaten run of ten matches. However, they have already conceded two so far in the finals, having fallen 2-1 to hosts France on the opening day.
Form (all competitions):
Romania: DDLLW
Switzerland: LDWWD
Betting predictions
Switzerland were rather lucky to edge past debutants Albania, while Romania were perhaps unfortunate against France. As a result of their repspective performances, the Romanians look like a decent bet at the prices available.
