Garbine Muguruza vs Venus Williams - Wimbledon Final preview and odds
July 15, 2017 14:00am - Wimbledon
Wimbledon Championships Womens Tennis
Tennis fans could be treated to a cracking match on Saturday afternoon as two of the game`s big hitters go head-to-head in the 2017 Wimbledon women`s singles final. Veteran performer Venus Williams is gunning for a sixth title on the famous grass courts, while young pretender Garbine Muguruza will be hoping to add a second Grand Slam title to her collection following her win at last year`s French Open.
Both players have been in great form but it is Muguruza who has really impressed after a string of top class performances including her 6-1 6-1 semi-final destruction of Magdalena Rybarikova. What`s more, the memory of her Rome win over Williams just a couple of months ago will still be fresh in her mind. That win marked her first victory over the American having lost all three of their previous meetings.
The Spaniard made it to the final here in 2015 when she was defeated by Serena Williams in straight sets. Despite that setback she continued to perform well and bagged her first Grand Slam less than a year later at Roland Garros. Her form dipped somewhat after that but she is now back to her devastating best and has been arguably the most impressive performer in the women`s draw this fortnight. Having already disposed of World No. 1 Angelique Kerber, she must now try and topple one of the game`s greatest ever players.
Venus Williams made light work of her semi-final clash against Britain`s Johanna Konta, cruising to a straight sets win despite a strong performance from her opponent. She must now face the young Spanish player on grass for the first ever time as she continues her quest to become a seven-time Wimbledon champion and the oldest female winner of the event. A win would take her overall Grand Slam haul to eight.
Despite a shaky start in week one, the American has paced herself well and arrives at the final in exceptional form, having dropped just one set overall.
Betting odds and tips
In what should be a tough and aggressive final with plenty of attacking play, there is little to separate these two players. Venus has plenty of experience on her side, but both players are Grand Slam winners and Muguruza is improving all the time. In fact, she looks all set to be a dominant force in the game over the next few years. Whether, she has risen to a sufficient level to beat a five-time champion playing out the final stages of her career remains to be seen, but she has shown enough in the last two weeks to suggest that she can get the job done.
Back Muguruza to win in four sets at 3/1 with Bet365.
