Middleweight Boxing Betting Preview: Saul `Canelo` Alvarez vs Gennady `Triple G` Golovkin
September 17, 2016 04:00am - T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas
IBF World Heavyweight Championship
After the hype of the recent Forget Mayweather vs McGregor contest, boxing fans can now look forward to what must surely be classed as the fight of the 2017 as Saul `Canelo` Alvarez tales on Gennady `Triple G` Golovkin in Las Vegas.
Golovkin will look to reinforce his champion status by putting two of his world middleweight belts (WBA and IBF) on the line, while also running the risk of vacating his other two titles (WBC and IBO). The venue may be the same as the Mayweather/McGregor event but this is a very different contest and one that hard core boxing fans have been looking forward to for a while.
Golovkin remains unbeaten, while Alvarez suffered the only defeat of his pro career at the hands of Mayweather back in 2015. As a result, there are plenty who feel that the 27-year-old Mexican could topple the Kazakhstani on Saturday night.
Canelo (Cinnamon in Spanish) - who got his nickname thanks to his distinctive red hair - is a powerful hitter, as British fighter Amir Khan found out to his peril last year. In that respect, he is certainly a match for the world champion and for many pundits, this fight is just too close to call.
Alvarez is still a youngster in boxing terms and with a good 10 years of career left ahead of him, he could go on to be one of the greats if he passes this test.
Conversely, Triple G is coming to the end of his career and may be facing his toughest challenge so far. Any mistakes will quickly get punished by the technically-gifted Mexican and he could easily find himself worn down if this turns in to an endurance contest. With that in mind, don`t expect this fight to go the distance.

Betting odds and tips
Golovkin`s record speaks for itself but he was taken to 12 rounds for the first time in his career last time out (by Daniel Jacobs) and could find it even tougher going here.
The challenger is approaching his peak and will arrive here exceptionally well prepared. He will have learnt a lot from his fight with Mayweather and has the technical ability as well as the power to get the job done here. Of course, it wont be easy but a price of 22/1 for a 7-9 round triumph looks like a tempting proposition.
