On the Fringe will look to claim a third-straight amateurs` Gold Cup win on Friday afternoon, this time with Jamie Codd in the saddle. Nina Carberry rode Enda Bolgers 12-year-old to victory in the last two editions but is absent due to pregnancy.
The veteran horse comes into this in good shape, having finished runner-up to Foxrock in the preparation race at Leopardstown. Historically, he has always improved from the warm-up race to the main event and will need to do so again this year although he certainly looked sharper than in last years prep race. That precedent does not bode well for the rest of the field.
One potential challenger is Ask the Weatherman. He has been beaten just once in nine races and that was over two years ago at Larkhill. A strong point-to-point racer, he made his debut in the Wincanton Hunter Chase last month and came home at the head of the field despite a wobble at the first fence. Looks to have plenty in the tank and could cause a bit of an upset if he gets it right on Friday.
