Premier League preview and odds: Sunderland vs Hull City

November 19, 2016 15:00pm - Stadium of Light

Premier League

Rock bottom Sunderland will be out to prove that their recent win away to AFC Bournemouth was not just an anomaly when they host fellow strugglers Hull City to the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides looking for second win in a row

Sunderland fans were finally given something to cheer about two weeks ago when their side claimed their first win of the season away to AFC Bournemouth. David Moyes will now be hoping to follow that up with a victory on home soil against the third-from-bottom team.

Prior to that game, the Black Cats had lost eight of their previous 10 games and had drawn just twice. However, they are still stuck on the bottom of the table, level on points with out-of-sorts Swansea City and six points adrift of safety. A win this weekend could give them the confidence boost they need to make a push for survival.

Moyes` men have picked up just a single point on home soil this season - thanks to a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion - but they did manage to score in four of the five games they have played.

Meanwhile, Hull City are also coming into this game on the back of a much needed win, having defeated 10th-ranked Southampton 2-1 before the international break.

Unlike Sunderland, the Tigers had a good start to the season, picking up maximum points from their opening two games. Since then, however, the wheels have fallen off and Mike Phelan`s men have the second-worst form in the league over the last eight games.

Prior to their recent win, the Yorkshire club had lost six Premier League matches in a row during which they scored just three goals. Away from home, they have lost their last three, scoring twice and conceding 12 goals in the process.

Team news

The home side could welcome back several players from injury including Victor Anichebe (rib), Paddy McNair (shoulder) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring), while Jan Kirchhoff (hamstring) and Lee Cattermole (back) are also in contention. Italian striker Fabio Borini is still at least a week away from fitness.

Meanwhile, the visitors will have to make do without the injured group of Abel Hernandez (groin), Will Keane (ACL), Moses Odubajo (knee), Andrew Robertson (calf), Greg Luer (knee) and Alex Bruce (Achilles).

Recent form (League):

Sunderland: WLLLD

Hull City: WLLLL

Betting odds and tips

Sunderland have conceded at least once in every game that they have played this season. They have only picked up one point on home soil and have conceded the first goal on nine occasions this term.

Hull City also have trouble keeping clean sheets and have now conceded in each of their last nine matches. Like Sunderland, they have also conceded first in 82% of their matches.

With both sides feeling buoyed by recent wins, this could be a game where the two desperate strugglers cancel each other out.
