Australian Open preview and odds: Roger Federer vs Alexandr Dolgopolov
January 20 2016 11:00am - Rod Laver Arena
Australian Open - Round 2
Five-time champion Roger Federer will be hoping to avoid an early round slip-up when he takes on 35th-ranked Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round of the Australian Open.
Federer showing vintage form
Roger Federer barely broke a sweat in his first round demolition of Nikoloz Basilashvili and will be hoping for to build on that performance on Wednesday. The 34-year-old took just 72 minutes to secure a 6-2 6-1 6-2 victory over the young Russian despite not playing at his best.
The Swiss player will now take on a player that he has only played twice before but beat on both occasions. Based on recent form, it should be a routine win for the World No. 3.
Dolgopolov will need strength and a slice of luck
Alexandr Dolgopolov took four sets to secure a first round victory over 85th-ranked Ricardas Berankis, and will need to up his game if he is going to give Federer and run for his money.
Despite a strong serve and good follow-up play, the Ukrainian remains error-prone. But even if he can excel in all departments and avoid making any silly mistakes on Wednesday, it may still not be enough to defeat the Swiss legend. To stand any chance of winning, the World No. 36 will need Federer to have a rare off day.
