Premier League
The race for top four places heats up on Sunday as third-ranked Manchester City, rocked by their mid-week Euro exit, take on a Liverpool side who boast an impressive record against the top six teams.
City looking to salvage dwindling season
Just one point separates third and fourth in the Premier League although third-ranked Manchester City do have a game in hand on their rivals from down the East Lancashire Road. With both sides looking to cement a place in the top four, this game could set a crucial tone heading into the run-in.
Pep Guardiola`s men will have to pick themselves and dust themselves down following their disappointing Champions League exit in midweek. The Citizens let a 5-3 first leg lead slip, falling 3-1 to Monaco in the Round of 16 second leg clash.
The good news for the home side is that they have only been beaten once at home all season, and that defeat came against champions elect Chelsea. In fact, there is a case to be made that City were the dominant force in that game and could have won comfortably had they taken their chances. However, their overall record against top six sides is not great, with Arsenal being the only such team they have beaten at home. When they travelled to Anfield earlier this term, they fell to a single goal from Georginio Wijnaldum.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will look to continue their strong form against the top teams as they aim to leapfrog their rivals on Sunday. The Reds come into this game on the back of successive wins at home to Arsenal and Burnley however, they have not won any of their last four on the road.
Against the top seven teams this season, Jurgen Klopp`s men have won six and drawn four and seem to thrive in the games against the bigger teams. What`s more, they have won their last four clashes against the team from Manchester.
Team news
Gabriel Jesus (metatarsal fracture) and Ilkay Gundogan (knee) are still unavailable for Guardiola.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are still managing a significant injury list that includes Jordan Henderson (foot), Daniel Sturridge (hip flexor strain), Oviemuno Ejaria (ankle sprain) and Danny Ings (meniscus tear), while Divock Origi (illness), Roberto Firmino (hip) and Marko Grujic (hamstring strain) are all the doubtful list.
