French Open preview and odds: Borna Coric vs. Taylor Fritz

May 22, 2016 TBC - Roland Garros

Men`s Tennis - French Open, first round

Two of men`s tennis` hottest prospects will go head-to-head in this French Open first round clash as Croatian World No. 44 Borna Coric takes on 72nd-ranked Taylor Fritz of the USA.

The next generation

Two 19-year-olds with big futures will battle it out in the first round of the French Open next week. But who will prevail in the battle of the next generation?

Right-handed Croatian Borna Coric has been tipped by many as a future top-five player. Having already broke into the top 40, he will now be looking to progress even further by putting in a big performance in France.

His clay season started well with an appearance in the final in Marrakech where he was eventually beaten by Federico Delbonis. Appearances in Monte Carlo, Estoril and Madrid were ended by Philipp Kohlschreiber, Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic respectively, while his recent outing in Rome was brought to a swift end by qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin.

Coric made it to the last 32 at last year`s edition of this event, before his journey was brought to an end by another young American Jack Sock.

Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz has not had a great start to the clay season, having failed to progress beyond the qualifying stages in Madrid and Rome, before falling to Gilles Simon in the second round in Nice.

His best performance of the year so far came as a Wild Card entry on the hard courts of Memphis back in February where he progressed all the way to the final before falling to top seed Kei Nishikori. Earlier in the year, he took part in an epic five-set battle with fellow American Jock Sock in the first round of the Australian Open. Unfortunately, his compatriot got the better of him on that occasion.

Betting predictions

In what will be the first meeting between these two players, Borna Coric should be backed to come out on top. Rome aside, his form on clay has been decent, while Fritz has struggled to get going and still looks much more comfortable on the hard courts.
