Champions League preview and odds: PSV Eindhoven vs Atletico Madrid
February 24, 2016 19:45pm - Philips Stadion
Champions League - Round of 16, First leg
PSV Eindhoven return to the knockout stages of the Champions League after a nine years absence on Wednesday night to face Atletico Madrid. The last time the two sides met in this competition, it was the Spaniards who came out on top.
PSV making good progress
The last time PSV Eindhoven reached the knockout stages of Europe`s elite club tournament in 2006/07, they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by eventual finalists Liverpool.
Since then, the Dutch side have twice made the quarter-finals of UEFA`s second-tier competition. So far, this season they have only been beaten once at home in all competitions. That 1-3 defeat came at the hands of fellow Dutch club Utrecht in the KNVB Cup three weeks ago.
They come into this game on the back of a trio of wins in their domestic league, in which they did not concede a single goal. As a result, they are currently perched on top of the Dutch league table.
Atletico serious contenders again
Atletico Madrid have yet to lose an away game in this year`s competition. Their only defeat came on home soil against Benfica back in September. However, they still qualified as winners of Group C.
Diego Simeone`s men are currently sat in second place in La Liga, eight points adrift of pace-setters Barcelona. In their last game they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Villarreal.
The 2014 finalists will be hoping to improve on last year`s showing in this event, when they were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by their city rivals, Real Madrid.
Team news
Maxime Lestienne is injured for the home side, but Mexican midfielder Andres Guardado is in line for a return after three weeks out injured.
Meanehile, the away side will be without Partey, Tiago, Carrasco and Fernandez, who are all still injured.
