First run in 1834, the King Edward VII Stakes is a Group 2 race open to three-year-old colts and geldings. It is run over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs (2,414 metres). Originally known as the Ascot Derby, it was renamed in 1926 in honour of King Edward VII.
As usual, this race features some Epsom Derby campaigners including top pick Permian. While the derby did not go as planned for the Michael Johnstone-trained horse, a better race strategy should see him improve on that showing here. His overall season has been one of solid progression, so there is no reason to suggest that he cannot prevail here, especially with this jockey/trainer combination.
Permian got the better of Crystal Ocean in the Dante at York but there was not much in it on the day. And while the former has experienced that derby blip since, the latter skipped that race and comes here fresh. Sir Michael Stoute`s colt looks ready for the step up in trip and will probably head off as favourite here.
Betting odds and tips
Permian can be expected to bounce back from his Derby experience and looks to be the class horse in the field. However, the improving Crystal Ocean could push him all the way.
You can back Permian at a price of 13/2 with Bet365, while Crystal Ocean is available at 9/4 with the same bookmaker.
Remember, Bet365 are offering guaranteed best odds on all Royal Ascot races and a 100% deposit bonus up to £200 for new accounts.
