Champions League preview and odds: Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich
April 27, 2016 19:45pm - Estadio Vicente Calderon
Champions League - Semi-final, first leg
One of two teams representing Spain (and Madrid) in the last four of this years Champions League tournament will be in action on Wednesday night as Atletico Madrid welcome German side Bayern Munich to Estadio Vicente Calderon.
Atletico now firmly established amongst Euro elite
Atletico Madrid have reached the quarter-final stage or beyond for the third-straight season and can once again be classed as one of Europe`s elite teams. Diego Simeone`s men have their sights set on their second final in three years but must first see off the formidable challenge of Pep Guardiola`s Bayern Munich.
The team from Madrid have lost just one of their last 21 games at home in all competitions. Since losing 2-1 at home to Benfica in the earlier stages of this competition, they have won four in a row without conceding a single goal.
The teams last met in the 1974 European Cup final replay in Brussels when the Germans eventually prevailed by a 4-0 score-line after the first game had ended 1-1.
Bayern meet Spanish opposition in semis for third year running
Bayern Munich have been drawn against a Spanish team at the semi-final stage of the Champions League for the third-straight season. In the last two editions, they lost their first leg ties away to Real Madrid (0-1) and Barcelona (0-3). They do not have a great record in Spain having won on just six of their 23 competitive visits.
Remarkably, the German club are playing in their 18th European Cup semi-final, having previously won 10 and lost seven. Since losing to Barcelona last year, the club has played 11 Champions League fixture, with their only defeat coming at Arsenal back in October.
Team news
Matías Kranevitter, Óliver Torres, Diego Godín and Tiago will all be missing for the home side.
Meanwhile, the visitors will have to cope without the injured trio of Sebastian Rode, Arjen, Robben and Holger Badstuber.
