Chelsea vs Southampton - Premier League preview and odds
Published on: 28/04/2017
Premier League Chelsea will look to extend their lead at top of the Premier League table when they take on ninth-ranked Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night. Finishing line in sight for Blues
Having knocked Tottenham Hotspur out of the FA Cup at the weekend, Chelsea will now look to move seven points clear of their London rivals in the Premier League title race.
With just six games left to play, Antonio Contes men are well and truly in the driving seat in the race for Premier League glory. The Blues currently enjoy a four-point gap over Spurs and may have landed an important psychological blow with their cup win at the weekend.
The Stamford Bridge side were disappointingly beaten 2-0 at Manchester United in their last league outing and will be looking to bounce back on the comfort of home soil. Meanwhile, opponents Southampton (currently ninth) can finish no higher than eighth in the league and are well positioned to achieve that having played two games less than eighth-ranked West Bromwich Albion who have a four-point advantage.
Last time out, the Saints fell 0-3 at home to fourth-ranked Manchester City but they have won three of their last four on the road, the only exception being the 2-1 defeat at Spurs. With league position and pride, the only things left to pay for, the South Coast side might just lack the motivation and urgency of their hosts.
Team newsEngland international defender Gary Cahill is suffering from an illness and remains a doubt for the home side. Meanwhile, Claude Puel will have to make do without the injured group of Sam McQueen (groin strain), Virgil van Dijk (ankle), Charlie Austin (dislocated shoulder), Alex McCarthy (hamstring strain) and Matt Targett (hamstring strain).

Betting odds and tips
Chelsea have won 75% of their matches and scored in all of their home matches this term. However, after a long run of clean sheets, they have now conceded at least one goal in each of their last 10 matches.
Southampton have been decent on the road in recent weeks having won three of their last four and scored in each of their last five away matches. As a result, both teams can be expected to score with taking all three points.
