Confederations Cup - Semi-finals
The highly attacking encounter that was expected in the first semi-final between Portugal and Chile never quite materialised as the teams played a goalless draw that eventually had to be settled via a penalty shootout. So what can we expect from the second semi-final on Wednesday night?
The Germans have already shown in this tournament that their team of young charges can hold their own amongst the world`s elite teams. Their B Team won their group and remain joint-level top scorers in this event alongside the now-eliminated Portugal side.
Joachim Low`s men have been playing with a high level of confidence and will fancy their chances of going all the way in this event. The main headache for the Coach will be deciding which of the many strong performers have earned the right to start on Wednesday night. Timo Werner bagged a brace on his first start of the tournament last time out and the 21-year-old may have done enough to force himself into the reckoning here. While they have been particularly strong going forwards, there may be a few concerns that they have yet to keep a clean sheet in this event.
Meanwhile, Mexico have also failed to keep a clean sheet in this event although they have managed to score twice in each game. As well as beating the hosts and New Zealand, Mexico also defied the odds by holding European Champions Portugal to a 2-2 draw in their opening game. As a result, they should not feel too overwhelmed by the prospect of facing a weakened world champion side.
The Mexicans have lost just one of their last 17 matches (2-1 vs Croatia) since losing 7-0 to Chile in the quarter-finals of the Copa America, an indication that they have now put that nightmare result behind them. They have scored in each of their last 11 games so they can at least be expected to mark the score sheet in this final four clash.
